Inquisitor’s Oath
By this holy office I, [ ], shall bear these duties, on account of the evils and heresies to be found in this church. I fully and eagerly by this, my office, entrusted with the commands of right worship, earthly punishments, and with the labors of perceiving the hearts of men. In these evil times, the office of High Inquisitor is to be instituted now in every city, for the sake of absolving those who wish to repent of their (own) heresies.
They shall return (in)to the church. These men will use their magic to discern the non-believers. His magic shall not be perceived by the unlearned as magic, but as gifts given by God. Thus, they have been entrusted with the mysteries of faith. Having donned the vestments, they shall fortify the traditions and writings.
They shall fight against the powers, against the sinners. In their violence and fear, they choose death. Disregard for the law of the magisterium will make them despair. They drink with demons, and they adhere rigidly to false doctrines. They dwell on the roads, in dark alleys, lest their lies be allowed to be spoken in this place. They yield not in their plots, since the whole church has been stricken. Therefore, through the night, we, the guards of the dogmatic questions, whoever will swear to the church, he shall refute false thoughts, and we shall cast down all the enemies of faith and reason. Certain abilities displayed by the novices of this (most) holy office have conjured, not by magic but by miracles and signs from on high.
It is required that each minister bear the natural marks of an Inquisitor since birth. Not by paint of body or by markings of the branding iron, these men (and women) shall be chosen, but by the grace of the divine.
Be warned, and be watchful. For men with belief and ideas unlike (to) the path will conspire with incursion into this most blessed order. By guile and deceptions they shall spread their heresies.
They shall not perform miracles, which are heralded by natural signs; but often these have subsisted secretly, hidden in plain view; adherents to ancient heresy; heresy that has changed in form, but not practice.
????? quibus offici????s Ego, [ ], illa officia geram.
Ei in ecclesiam redibunt.
H???? viri magica eorum ????tentur incredulos discernere.
Induendis vestimentis, traditiones script????sque munient.
Ei contra potentes pugnabunt, contra peccatores. In violentia metuque eorum, ei mortem optant.
Habitent in vias, in angiportibus tenebris,
